Creating single or multiple Multi tiles?

Hey!
Say that I want to make an area into a multi area (Think house/boat). I was thinking that could be obtained by creating a tile that is a multi that is placed under the actual ground. But I really never messed around with multis. Any ideas on the easiest way to do this?
