Search for a Scripter

Post by Velasca »

Firstly, I would like to apologize if this is in any inappropriate or if it is in the wrong section.

Our shard has been online and running for a few months now in beta stage. We have a custom map and a dedicated server. We are using POL 96. We have a small player base but have not joined the ultima online lists yet.

We had an excellent scripter who had to suddenly take his leave due to real life complications. This has left us at a loss. Each of the staff has their skills but we only had him for a scripter. We have most of the scripts we will be needing however they are incomplete or in 095 format still. If anyone is interested in helping us along even only from time to time it would be really appreciated. We have already attempted to upgrade or complete the scripts ourselves but with little sucess. We really could use the help of someone more experienced than we are. If anyone is interested please post a reply.

Thanks for reading!

We are still looking, once again.

now that I have a better picture of what we're facing... We need to update or fix from 095 to 096...

If anyone is willing to take that on or teach we'd appreciate it...

Thanks,

Karm.

Even if no-one is now willing to dedicate to help you out, don't give up! Scripting isn't hard thing to learn and forum is an excellent place to ask questions. Upgrading scripts to work on a new core, especially 095->096, is not the easiest thing to begin the learning with, but there are many who have gone through it and are able to guide you with the most common problems.

Don't hesitate to ask and script and ask and you shall learn.

It probably isn't as difficult as I think it is... however I don't even know where to start.. and when that happens it seems impossible.

Hey, if you're looking for a place to start, you can go to the pol 096 and pol 095 documentation pages.

for example, this is the pol096 docs page.

http://docs.polserver.com/pol096/index.php

in the "Tutorials and Guides" section, you'll see a escripting guide, its link is this:

http://docs.polserver.com/pol096/escriptguide.html

I've starded there.

you can also read the

http://docs.polserver.com/pol096/gumps.html

guide if you want to learn how to write gumps.

you can talk to your old scripter so you can get an ideia of what he was doing and how he was doing, just so you can continue in the same path.

After reading those guides, you should know how pol call some default scripts, and that can take some time of you.

that is done by reading the reference guides, such as this

http://docs.polserver.com/pol096/configfiles.php

which explains which each default configuration file is used for.

Reading reference is boring for some people, but that is what is going to save you time in the future.

If you're not a programmer, this can be a bit hard, but if you are, you'll be able to start writing scripts 2 or 3 days afer you read the scripting guide.

Good Luck, and It's not that easy to find a POL scripter, i think you should learn it by yourself, and, if you want, search for a scripter just to help you.

scripters are a core kind of "GM", either you have to trust in it a lot or you have to do it yourself.

There isn't a question of asking the person who was doing this before. He had other commitments and just stopped.

I did send the entire pol folder (seemed easier) and was told that most of it is 095... does that mean I should scrap it.. and just re download pol in 96 and start fresh?

I skimmed through some of those links, and I don't learn well from reading, more from being shown then trying ...

If you want to upgrade from 095 to 096 you should read 095docs first, understand what you have, and then read 096docs, and then make the modifications it needs to be done.

If you don't learn by reading, you can't learn stuff alone, and I doubt you're going to get someone to teach you eScript.

That doesn't sound very positive... People learn in different ways... And not everyone learns the same way.

but I will read through everything and see what happens

Thanks

I know it, I know how people learn, i've done courses on learning, i've learned that if you gather all senses you'll learn more and that people learn better from different senses and all that stuff. It's amazing.

But pol docs are only available in text format, you can't listen to it, no one is going to make "hands on experience" with you in POL, you have no choice here.

And yes, it's not very positive. POL's docuementation are just enough, they're not "damn good".

so what your saying... is no one wants to take the time to teach other people? That seems kind of strange.

And if one doesn't understand what they're reading, and no one is willing to explain it, then there isn't any point in reading on because the reader will loose interest since they can't understand what they're reading.

No man, I said that no one is going to take time to teach you scripting.

They'll help you with doubts, but they're not going to teach you from scratch.

And I never saw anyone not understanding that guide, it's pretty easy to be understood.

I think your problem is not "not knowing where to begin", is not wanting to study.

Read the scripting guide and you'll learn eScript, read the reference and you'll know how pol glue everything together.

I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to "study". Not everyone is going to understand what those documents mean at first glance. And no one would be teaching me to script from scratch, since I already know some basic stuff.

But thanks for your input.

if you do not get it after the first read, just read it again, try to figure it out why you didn't understand what you've read, etc.

and you're here because you want a scripter, as far as I know.

I backed up all my old pol files and reinstalled the distro for 095 and copied the new 096 over it like it said to do. I pointed everything in the correct place ie: uo folder and client, ip and all that...

I created britania and pol doesn't run.. when I try to run the backed up stuff it works.

I get the following errors:

Warning! pkg/foundations/hooks/regen.ecl does not exist!
Exception caught while loading script pkg/foundations/hooks/regen.ecl: Unable to open pkg/foundations/hooks/regen.ecl for reading.

Make sure you've compiled your scripts and that they all compiled correctly. Also make sure you only compile scripts with the ecompile.exe that came with that exact version of POL.

Hello

Pop into our #POL IRC channel. Its pretty quiet sometimes, but if you ask your question, and... wait atleast until "Tomorrow" I will try to answer it when I see it.
Its the best way to get real-time support; or you can ask in the forums. Adam (Madman) and I are trying to step up the question answering.

I posted in the channel and I tried to reinstall pol95 and I still received the same error. I tried to follow the steps and ecompiled and all it does is flash and close. I'm sure I'm not doing something right.

any help is appreciated.

POL must have closed. Once POL finishes the starting process, all things are then logged to pol.log.
