Post by innominabile »

A system in which account select character by script gump (an hook) ?
In client all player in selection load an unique virtual player use only to select by script the real player?

Not sure if this one is really possible/practical with the client itself. I seem to recall a while ago that maybe Sphere had something where you could type a dot-command to get a list of your characters, and select one to 'insta switch' to that character... however, that basically screwed up every client I ever used it on. It may have worked with old clients or something, perhaps.

But basically, the client will expect only to be told certain things, at certain times; When it wants a list of characters, it expect a list of characters in a predefined format - not a custom gump to display characters. But then even if you have some 'generic' "nobody" character for a player to log into (something that itself seems rather wasteful of shard memory and storage when you consider that every account needs one of these), then get them logged in and present a gump... as noted above, I just don't think most clients will have any idea what to do properly with a "Login Character" packet at that point.

And that's to say nothing of how you would be required to change the entire method of storage of characters to accommodate this in the first place.

That said, if you are really bent on doing this, I have a scripted suggestion: Create a system where each player really does only have a single character, and prevent them from 'doing' anything while logged on as that character except view a custom "character selection" gump. When they choose their char from that gump, you would read their character's information all from a data file, and CHANGE their character to all the stats/appearance based on that. You would likely use Storage Area to store their stuff, and so restore it to their 'blank' character.

Then, on logoff, you would need to 'store' their character and all their things back; Save their character state to the datafile again, and move their equipment and backpack contents back to the storage area you made for them.

Note that a datafile is the only appropriate thing for this, as you need to EDIT values in it.

Also, you would need to be extra careful to get ALL instances of them 'logging off' to be sure you properly save and clear their properties and such. And, you would also need to make sure that if they 'delete' their character through their gump, that you also properly handle their 'stored items' container.
